Welcome

A quiet ridge in West Sikkim, and a mountain that fills the window

Asian Hills sits in Upper Pelling, a small hill town that most people reach after a long, winding drive through cardamom and pine. The reward arrives the next morning, usually before seven, when the cloud lifts off the Kanchenjunga range.

The hotel is built around that view. Rooms are finished in local pine and teak, kept warm and simple, and each one has a private balcony rather than a sealed window. Downstairs there is a restaurant serving Sikkimese, Indian and Chinese food, and a lounge where the bonfire gets lit on clear evenings.

  • Kanchenjunga-facing rooms in the Deluxe Executive and Premium Executive categories.
  • Two minutes from Pemayangtse Monastery and the Rabdentse ruins.
  • Travel desk on site — cabs, sightseeing circuits and airport transfers arranged.
  • Run by Newa Hospitality, with the same team looking after guests year round.

The Himalayan day

What a stay here actually looks like

Pelling is small enough to do slowly. Here is roughly how the hours fall.

Morning light entering a guest room through the open balcony doors
05:20 – 06:40

First light on the range

The cloud usually clears before sunrise. Open the balcony door, take the tea outside and watch the snow line turn from grey to gold. It lasts about twenty minutes.

Prayer flags strung beside the hotel with the hills behind
09:00 – 12:00

Monasteries and ruins

Pemayangtse is a two-kilometre walk. Carry on to the Rabdentse ruins through the forest path — the old capital of Sikkim, mostly empty on weekdays.

The hotel lounge with sofas and warm ceiling lighting
19:30 onwards

Dinner, then the bonfire

Sikkimese thukpa and momos, or a plain home-style thali. On clear nights the bonfire is lit outside and the sky over West Sikkim does the rest.

Guest room balcony looking out over forested ridges
Afternoon

Village walks and tea

Darap village, the Limbu houses, cardamom drying in the sun, and roadside tea that costs ten rupees.

Premium room interior with pine ceiling and mountain-facing windows
Any hour

Doing nothing, well

A book, the balcony chair, and the mountain deciding when it wants to show itself. This is what most guests remember.
